THE EIDOZOAN

The eidozoan (from eidos- “image” and -zoo “living being”) or A.B.I. (Autonomous Biological Image) is a living image created, grown and inoculated into different imaginary hosts and habitats.

EIDOZOOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF LIVING IMAGES

Images are living beings.

Images are born, grow and live in their habitat (the imaginary) in a way that resembles biological processes. Images are born, grow, evolve, feed themselves, suffer, mate, mutate, extinct, migrate, fight, struggle, proliferate, die.

To investigate how an image can live, interact with different imaginaries and other images, i have started creating sorts of “guinea-pig images”: something that recaed nothing pre- cisely, yet living, able to evolve and to inhabit any imaginary: i caed it “eidozoan” (living image).

My art is essentially an uninterrupted experiment about eidozoans’ behaviour and its relationships with a strange but welcoming habitat: our world.

During my short stay in the gorgeous city of Madrid, I had the great opportunity to visit La Tabacalera, a large Social Centre in the heart of the multi-ethnic district of Lavapiés.

The recent occupation of the huge construction (originally a tobacco factory) quickly leaded to lots of interesting social, artistic and creative projects, and I'm sure that its popularity amongst Madrid people, yet already very strong, is bound to fly more and more high.

Of course I couldn't refuse the opportunity to test my recently acquired wall-painting skills to embellish a pair of the many walls that this place has to offer. The results are in this Flickr set.

I've painted colonies of iridescent outgrowths upon a cheap and anonymous landscape, found in a basement, flourishing upon the pristine brush strokes of a forgotten painter. The enigmatic presence of their shapes, placid yet austere, redeem the picture from its own stupor giving it a pulsating new life. The landscape, stolen from the dust and finally inhabited, now shares the destiny of these silent guests, at the expense of its own anonymous identity, but in exchange for a luxuriant, perturbing new youth.

This is my first painted portrait, and my first nude. With this piece I experimented a different painting technique, less pop and more surrealistic: the result is softer, more pictorial than usual, with no hard black borders - I am satisfied with it expecially in the hands, the "pet" and the vagina-eye.

The model is my girlfriend Elena, who I thank very much.

The title is taken from one of Max Ernst picture novels: "The one hundred heads woman".

Vacon Sartirani: la colonizzazione dell'immaginario

Solo due anni fa Vacon Sartirani mi aveva mostrato i suoi primi lavori: come toccato da una folgorazione (probabile prodotto di un misterioso fascino per certe branche della biologia e dell'anatomia) mi mostrava una grande quantità di disegni: dallo stile un po' acerbo se paragonati ai lavori odierni, fatti con dei pennarelli su carta da fotocopie, raffiguravano una moltitudine di personaggi tratti dal contesto quotidiano (ricordo bene un anziano in compagnia del nipote, un bimbo sul triciclo…) i quali però avevano una caratteristica per lo meno inquietante: ogni corpo era stato sostituito da "colonie nerborute di escrescenze ipertrofiche, inclassificabili e pulsanti” (come le definì poi Erica Bellomi), capaci di stimolare contemporaneamente fascino e ripugnanza. Vacon stesso mi confermò poi che era ben deciso a non raffigurare "alcunché di umano" e mi confessava il gusto immenso che provava nel sabotare il meccanismo psicocognitivo che ci impone di individuare volti e altre caratteristiche umane anche dove queste sono assenti.

Ben presto tale sfida lo portò a quello che utilizzando il gergo informatico chiamerei un lavoro di hackeraggio mentale: le sue "escrescenze tentacolari" abbandonarono il contesto quotidiano per violare i volti dalle icone della cultura contemporanea: da Topolino al Papa, da Elvis a Hitler. Nella sovrapposizione, inevitabile, dei due registri (quello immanente, alieno, perturbante, con quello del volto impalpabile ma persistente che l'inconscio collettivo ci obbliga a sovrapporre alla nota icona - supponiamo - del Che) Vacon denunciava un filo scoperto, una falla nel nostro sistema iconico, tramite cui le sue creature parassitarie erano riuscite ad entrare ed a proliferare, come una sorta di virus. Ormai il gioco era stato svelato, e Vacon era pronto ad affilare le armi per una sfida più grande.

Ritrovatesi così all'interno del sistema iconografico, le escrescenze di Vacon hanno cominciato da subito ad interagire febbrilmente con l'ambiente circostante generando comunità sempre più invadenti di ibridi infestanti. Sono giunto alla conclusione che sia possibile individuare una sorta di strategia di conquista: Vacon utilizza l'ironia come un cavallo di Troia per insinuarsi in zone dell'immaginario estremamente fertili ma private, ostili o poco accessibili (come il sesso, o la religione, il mito, la storia…). Una volta dentro, lascia che il seme della sua immaginazione popoli di creature indescrivibili tale ambiente procedendo ad un'inarrestabile colonizzazione dell'immaginario visivo, che turbi violentemente l'ecosistema iconografico esistente.

E' per questo che i suoi più recenti lavori su tela raffigurano un inedito contatto tra le sue indicibili "creature" ed una razza di personaggi assai familiari, dalle fattezze di cartoons disney anni '30: un incontro ravvicinato tra popoli diversamente eppure ugualmente alieni, collocata esplicitamente nei territori del Mito. Lo sbarco è avvenuto, l'infestazione è in atto, anche i ruoli si fanno sempre più indefiniti (sono forse i cartoons i veri usurpatori di un territorio vergine?). L'esito di questa e di altre battaglie è ancora tutto da definire, ma di certo, conoscendo Vacon, sarà all'ultimo sangue…

This is my largest piece so far, and a troubled one.
It took me nearly a month to finish it, due to many accidents occured while working. The marker used for the preparatory sketch blurred, ruining the pink that had to be repainted - the color I used for the violet was no longer on sale (I used a ten-years-old jar of acrylic color, which fell on the floor and broke in the middle of the work) so I had to redo it twice with a new color - the lilac pigment wasn't thick enough, and I did three hands of painting in order to obtain the desired thickness. For these reasons I also call it "The Cursed Canvas".

The painting depicts Salome, stepdaughter of Herod Antipas, who danced before him and her mother Herodias at the occasion of his birthday, and in doing so gave her mother the opportunity to obtain the head of John the Baptist.

The Birth of Keith Haring

When I was asked to make an illustration for the 20th anniversary of Keith Haring's death I was excited. I always loved Keith's art since when I was a child and I cannot deny the great influence that him and his work have on my style and view on contemporary art.

But when I saw the selected piece I would pay homage to - the "mother and child" print of 1986 - well I was disappointed and a little upset. That work was so different than my style, my feelings, and it was none of my favourites at all.

But I saw it was a real challenge, and I started working on it.

After lots of attempts, I realized that Haring style can not be homaged - it seems so easy, but every attempt to get near to its pureness is doomed to look ridiculous, pretentious and profane. I was trying to celebrate myself through Haring's style, except of celebrating him with my own technique.

So I stopped to think about the picture and started to think about him, Haring: a person so fragile yet who gave so much to the world - a life spent trying to give art to all the people, and doomed by suffering - a Street Art Messiah's life.

After thinking to all this, I knew what I had to do: to celebrate The birth of Keith Haring.

Ortika nasce nel 2007 a Dugenta, un piccolo paesino della provincia di Benevento, con lo scopo di far incontrare cultura rurale e "streetart", il movimento artistico urbano per eccellenza!! Non a caso la prima edizione del fortunato evento si intitola "Ortika- 1st street art session "la street art va in campagna. Il connubio writers e street artists - fortemente voluto da Fabio della Ratta alias Biodpi ed accolto con favore dai giovani della locale associazione culturale

l'Agorà è risultato, senza dubbio, vincente, visto l'elevato numero di artisti che hanno aderito all'iniziativa (realizzando in loco o inviando le proprie opere) e la grande partecipazione di pubblico. Alcune delle opere, realizzate su supporti mobili, sono state le protagoniste di "caffè all'Ortika", mostra tenutasi al caffè letterario di Santa Maria Capua Vetere (CE). Nell'estate 2008, stessa formula, stessa suggestiva location, stesso successo per "ortika 2nd session", tant'è che, ancora una volta, lavori selezionati sono stati oggetto di una mostra nel suggestivo borgo medioevale di Sant'agata de' Goti (BN): "cafè all'ortika" al gotha cafè! Nell'autunno 2009 è la volta di "ortika posters and stikers". Al grido di "we have te wall ..send us your posters" OrtiKa è stata letteralmente sommersa da centinaia di posters e stikers, tanto che gli strett artist accorsi per l'occasione (cinaski, last 22, korvo, panic,... per citarne solo alcuni) non sono riusciti ad "attaccare" tutto il materiale proveniente dall'Italia e dall'estero. A breve il 2nd round!! oltre ad organizzare eventi Ortika è stata partner di alcune manifestazioni di street art, tra cui "il bn post it up” tenutosi presso il centro sociale "Depistaggio" di Benevento ed il "dask memorial" di Alife (CE). Ortika è da qualche mese anche in rete e già vanta oltre 2800 contatti.“Ortika street art lover”, infatti, la pagina creata da biodi sul più famoso social network -facebook- è diventata un piacevole luogo di scambio di urban artists provenienti da tutto il mondo. Ortika Street Art Lover, ha chiesto ai suoi "amici" di personalizzare l'immagine del profilo, realizzando una cover, ed ogni giorno si è riusciti a postare una immagine diversa. Questa operazione ha coinvolto e continua a coinvolgere, con successo, street artists e non solo, in un meltinpot di immagini e tecniche, che hanno rappresentato con spirito contemporaneo e divertito i vari aspetti e linguaggi della urban art. La pagina è diventata un muro virtuale ove potersi esprimere liberamente, una piccola galleria sempre in evoluzione, da ciò nasce l’idea di creare una mostra in cui esporre i cento lavori degli street art lovers.

La mostra, allestita al Circolo Arci “Rising Love” di Roma prevede la video proiezione dei 100 avatar visibili sulla pagina facebook “Ortika street” nella sezione foto del profilo e l’installazione di 30 opere realizzate da artisti selezionati tra coloro che hanno inviato l'avatar:

Mercoledì 3 marzo 2010 sono stati ufficializzati i nomi dei 40 artisti italiani selezionati per l'esposizione che caratterizzerà il nucleo centrale di “Lumen | Arte contemporanea in controluce”. I curatori della mostra: l'artista partenopeo Iabo, Augusto De Luca, meglio conosciuto come Graffiti Hunter e la giornalista d'arte nonché curatrice Mara De Falco, hanno selezionato i 40 nomi su di una rosa di circa cento candidati appartenenti alla scena street, urban e pop dell'arte contemporanea italiana. Lumen rispetto ad eventi espositivi analoghi svoltisi in passato, propone a tutti agli artisti coinvolti un preciso format creativo sul quale sviluppare le proprie opere. Tale format, di cui ancora non verranno svelate le caratteristiche “costringerà” gli artisti a rinunciare alle più canoniche tele, superfici murali, il legno o la carta.

Il progetto Lumen nasce circa un anno fa sulla scorta della perfomance/protesta “Madre Snaturata” sviluppatasi a sua volta in risposta all'esposizione Urban Superstar Show tenutasi presso il museo Madre di Napoli. Alcuni dei promotori di quell'”azione”, tra cui Iabo, Agusto De Luca, il collettivo Satoboy, supportati dal magazine online ziguline.it hanno deciso di dare seguito alla spinta creativa e propulsiva generatasi con Madre Snaturata dando vita al progetto denominato “Lumen | Arte Contemporanea in controluce”.

Fondamentale nella realizzazione di questo evento è stato il supporto finanziario giunto da un giovane e lungimirante imprenditore salernitano, Massimo Bisogno, che ha sposato fin dal primo momento l'idea propostagli dagli ideatori dell'evento, Satoboy Clt. e ziguline.it. A lui va la riconoscenza sia dei promotori che dell'intera comunità di artisti che potranno esibire il proprio lavoro anche in un territorio non facile come il sud Italia.

Il programma di Lumen è almeno nelle intenzioni dei suoi promotori molto ambizioso, dal momento in cui lo spazio espositivo si svilupperà su di una superficie di quasi 500mq ed accanto all'esposizione principale verranno affiancate una serie di installazioni collaterali inerenti il mondo dell'arte contemporanea e delle new media arts. A completare la rosa di eventi in programma sono previste una serie di performance artistiche e musicali live che verranno programmate lungo i tre week-end a cavallo tra il 15 ed il 30 maggio.

G40 - The Summit

I'm glad to officially announce my partecipation, with my "kiss series", at the NewBrow orgy that will go under the name of G40 - The Summit. An event organized by the contemporary art gallery ArtWhino that will take place at Arlington, Virginia from the 1st of march.

This huge event will gather more than 500 newbrow artists from all around the world, who will show their art for all the month of march. Some of the featured artists have really great names such Caia Koopman, Casey Weldon and Scott G. Brooks!

Unluckly I won't be there in person, (although I'd really like to) but my little work will be there to say: "Hey mum! Look at me! I'm in it too!"

After "Jacob Wrestling With The Angel", I go ahead with a classic biblical tale. As you may know :), Abraham is told by God to sacrifice his son, Isaac. He obeys the order, and is going to kill his son when an Angel, sent by God, stops Abraham's hand.

My first fatigue of 2010 is a large (80 x 100) painting of a biblical tale: the struggle between Jacob and "the angel" (depicted in the Bible as a stranger). I was inspired by an exhibition about Kosher at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, where a large painting depicting the scene was there to illustrate why Jews don't eat back parts of animals (really, really weird diet). I was so impressed by the tale (expecially for the "fighting against God and win" thing) that when I came back in Italy I started to read the biblical story of Jacob (really a naughty guy!) to do my own version of the tale.

Here is the quote from Genesis:

And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

Questo mese il Gallery Cafe' & Restaurant, in collaborazione con Famiglia Margini, presenta le evoluzioni contemporanee delle arti figurative: dai disegni tumorali di Vacon Sartirani, agli oscuri poster firmati da Marco Rea, fino alle fotografie d'infanzie rubate frutto delle esplorazioni intercontinentali di Lisa Borgiani, modificate dal gesto pittorico di Alberto Simoncini che riesce a restituire spontaneità e serenità.

La mutevolezza e' un carattere fondante del bello nei secoli e a tutte le latitudini, assume forme e tratti inaspettati. Il disegno come forma organica di interpretazione della realtà e' cio' che Vacon Sartirani ha definito negli ultimi anni come campo di ricerca nell'era del transgenico e delle bellezze al silicone.

L'utopia della perfezione come bellezza campeggia sui poster e sulle copertine glamour; le bombolette di Marco Rea la imprigionano e restituiscono all'occhio dello spettatore come un grido disperato dell'anima nel tentativo di evadere da un corpo artificiale opprimente in cui non si riconosce, delle vere trappole di bellezza.

All'estetica della perfezione fa da contraltare la realtà corrotta della povertà e dello sfruttamento subi'to in tutto il pianeta dai piccoli protagonisti delle fotografie di Lisa Borgiani, ai quali pero' Alberto Simoncini corre in soccorso nel tentativo estremo di restituire ai soggetti quel carattere infantile e di ingenua bellezza che mette in comune età e luoghi della vita in tutti i tempi.

Immagini che attraggono, respingono, catturano, sollevano, opprimono. Trasfigurazioni e metamorfosi del corpo e della mente.

Vacon Sartirani, poeta metasemantico, attore, ukulelista, nasce a Bergamo nel 1982 e nel 1994 perde il mignolo sinistro. Nel 2007 dà vita ad una febbrile serie di ritratti caratterizzati da un inconfondibile stile "tumorale", e da una pungente ironia iconoclasta, che lo porta in brevissimo tempo ad essere notato, attraverso internet, da numerose realtà italiane e internazionali legate al mondo dell'arte contemporanea. La sua carriera in questo ramo e' quindi appena iniziata.

Marco Rea nasce a Roma nel Novembre del '75. Laureando in Storia dell'arte presso la facoltà di Tor Vergata (Roma). Ha frequentato la Scuola Romana di fumetto. Tiene un corso di graffiti per ragazzi dai 13 ai 17 anni. Seguendo il forte impulso che lo spinge verso l'arte, intraprende sin da subito numerosi studi nelle discipline artistiche che lo porteranno ad altrettante esperienze nel mondo del fumetto, del writing, della scenografia teatrale ed in particolare della pittura. La sua e un'arte che esprime una personalità emozionata, in continua fibrillazione, sempre tesa alla ricerca della sua perfezione.

Alberto Simoncini e Elisa Borgiani cercano codici espressivi innovativi attraverso la fusione di fotografia e pittura. Lisa fotografa fanciulli, cattura ed esalta i tratti piu' profondi della loro personalità e l'ambiente in cui vivono, imprimendo sulla pellicola bellezza e commozione. Alberto, in arte Hal, con la pittura priva quei fanciulli degli occhi e della bocca e conduce lo spettatore ad un atto creativo - suo malgrado obbligato - per ricomporre l'immaginario inespresso. Il risultato di questi due lavori esalta l'elemento catturato dall'obiettivo accentuato dalla pittura come esasperazione dell'anima nuda e vera.

L’associazione Orange è lieta di presentare l’ultima mostra in programma del progetto iniziato quest’estate con la collaborazione del Comune di Bergamo e dell’Ufficio Giovani.
Due gli artisti in mostra: Daina Byckova e Vacon Sartirani.

Seppur nati da una ricerca artistica personale differente e pur essendo sviluppati con tecniche e materiali antitetici, i lavori dei due giovani artisti sono legati da un indiscussa ed applaudita maestria tecnica, che tra l’altro permette loro di creare intricati e complessi particolari che, nel caso di Vacon, rendono le immagini cariche di un’”assurda” veridicità contemporanea, mentre per Diana, uniscono realtà e finzione fiabesca in un equilibrio disarmante.

Nello specifico le incisioni che Diana presenta esprimono con chiarezza oltre che la padronanza dell’antica tecnica incisoria (in mostra si posso trovare litografie, acqueforti, acquatinta), anche un intenso studio e volontà di sperimentazione per adeguare la tecnica/mezzo al concetto/idea rappresentata.

La finitezza dei tratti e il realismo degli scenari e dei personaggi ritratti, tipici di una così detta holdschool, emergono e coesistono con i soggetti stessi, un misto di realtà e finzione che richiama alla mente favole antiche ma anche future; disegni dunque in cui viene esplicitato come l’utilizzo di tecniche antiche può fondersi con i ritmi e i “tempi futuri” senza correre il rischio di macchiarsi di mero recupero formare solo a fini elogiativi.

Le immagini surreali che invece abitano le tele di Vacon, si presentano come uomini mutanti simboli portatori di un significato più profondo, non esempi di una fervida immaginazione ma icone del nostro tempo, in cui si intravede il pensiero critico dell’artista.

E dunque sia nei più semplici ritratti a tinte piatte, sia nella folla di fronte ad un comizio che nel paesaggio agreste di una fattoria impossibile ritroviamo alcuni degli elementi caratterizzanti la nostra società ma visti con l’occhio indagatore dell’artista che, con giocosità e ironia, punta il dito, emette il proprio giudizio su ciò che lo circonda e che lo accompagna: la contemporaneità (di cui siamo sia spettatori che protagonisti).

Milano d’Agosto.
Deserta, calda. Poche alternative.
Ma per chi non è ancora andato in ferie, per chi è già andato, per chi per quest’anno ancora non ci andrà, qualcosa si muove!
Al MAGNOLIA di Milano Be|Different è riuscita a proporre una serata che, sottovoce, cambierà PER SEMPRE la fisionomia del locale.
IL 3 AGOSTO, rinfrescati con un po’ di musica e un po’ di pittura, dalle 22.00 fino a tarda notte:

UPDATE: sorry but the booklet is now SOLD OUT.

Today my first 30 copies of the book arrived. I immediatly made them available for purchase on Etsy, or directly here on my blog. I decided to make it no more available on-line throught Lulu for the following reasons:

* I check each one of them and send only the ones with none or very minor flaws. Some of them have very ugly ink stains or whatever, and if you'd buy directly from Lulu you can't be sure it won't happen to you.

*Each copy comes signed and, if you please, dedicated.

* To print a single copy of the booklet is much more expensive for Lulu than 30 or more. So if you make Lulu to print one copy for you, just a few cents really come to me and the remaining is used to cover the huge cost of printing starting. Buying from me, you'll be happy to know that less money is wasted, and more of it is used to incourage art, at the same retail price.

*Moreover, and for the same reason, is much more eco-friendly to make a 30 copies edition than a single edition.

So, beginning from now, you can buy "Lo specchio organico" right here at my Etsy shop.

I've putted on sale my canvas print on my Etsy page. They are ultra-hi quality canvas print (made by very professional german handcrafters: Blauprint™, I invite you to take a look at their site - they're excellent), they come with incredibly trusty color rendering, superior wood frames, already professionally stretched, with patented aluminium stretching system and aluminium clamp for easy hanging.

Each is a SINGLE edition, that it means that there is only a copy of each one - and I'll never do more.

I just joined the "Moly_X" project, an international Moleskine™ sketchbook exchange. It's extremely interesting, here it's how it works:

You, an artist, a drawerm whatever, buy a japanese fold moleskine notebook, the one with the accordion-like pages (that was the hard part, here in Italy), then join one of the many Moly_X groups on the web, and start a drawing in the first few parts of the giant-page, and then send that moleskine to the next artist. At the end of the circle, each artist will receive his own scketchbook filled with drawings from talented artists from all around the world. Exciting, isn't it?

The "circle" I have joined is Moly_X_72, along with Kelley Frisby, Chris Hack, Jeni Yang, and Son Do Minh. So be sure to follow it as soon you will see something cool happen in there!

Sabato 25 aprile ci sarà l'inaugurazione della mostra "I AM - identità in gioco", a cui parteciperà anche il sottoscritto. Se siete dalle parti di Milano, e magari state già festeggiando la Liberazione d'Italia (e auspicando una seconda) potete venirci a trovare in via Pergolesi 8 e io sarò lì a salutarvi come vecchi partigiani.

I'll take part to "I AM" - the collective exhibition about identity - in Spazio Pergolesi 8, in Milan. Vernissage is april the 25th!

I really love when fellow artists joke with each others' style, and today I had a really great surprise: the artist and Disegno Novo's member Ugandalebre made an excellent - how can you say - homage of my art, enriching one of my most peculiar subjects, "the dandy", with his outstanding, soft cartoonish chiaroscuro.
No need to say how proud I am of this tribute.

I don't dislike social networks, when they are not totally useless (who said Facebook?): on the contrary, I'm almost an addict of Flickr.
Recently I'm enjoying rising a group, called "Disegno Novo - Challenge the paper!" that collects talented drawers in the Flickr community, slightly filtered by my own taste (so usually there are lots of tentacles and line drawing in there!) in order to help each other to improve and show artworks.
